Can We Be Frien — Painting by Algis Skara
Acrylic on canvas, 228 × 141 cm, 2024. From the Shifting Identities series by contemporary abstract painter Algis Skara, based in Riga, Latvia.
About this painting
Under a sky that never quite wakes, two beings approach one another across a threshold neither of them remembers crossing. One is owl-like, made of knowledge and silence. The other — cat-formed, curious, alert, jittery with instinct. Their meeting is not planned, yet deeply needed. Around them swirl memories of others who’ve tried and failed to connect — scratched tallies of past attempts, symbols half-drawn, languages not quite deciphered. The red border beneath them marks a kind of stage or altar, a sacred site for questions like: “What are you?” and “Can we be…?” Their glowing eyes meet. And the painting asks: is recognition the beginning of friendship?
